The most commonly asked questions;

Q: I can already drive so will I need many lessons.

A
: This all depends on your current driving skills.

Q: Can I book my driving test when I think I am ready.

A
: Yes, but remember, you only have 3 lives so you need to make sure that you have reached this high standard of driving. Oakwell will advise you when to apply for the test.

1.) EYESIGHT

You must read a number plate at the required distance of 27.5 metres or 26.5 metres (for number plates issued after September 2001, with narrower figures and spacing) in good daylight. If glasses or contact lenses are required to read the number plate then they have to be worn whilst driving.

2.) SAFETY QUESTIONS

As from the 10th August 2005 the examiner will ask you to describe how to perform a check on the condition and safety of three components of the vehicle and demonstrate an actual check on the condition of a further two components.

The components will be chosen from the following list:

  • Tyres
  • Steering
  • Brakes
  • Lights
  • Reflectors
  • Direction Indicators
  • Audible warning device and the liquids used in the braking system, steering system, engine or else where in the vehicle as a coolant, lubricant, cleaner or otherwise.

3.) DRIVING ABILITY

The test lasts for about one - hour and is of an advanced nature and a very high standard of competence is required. A thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety must be displayed. The examiner must be satisfied on the following subjects:

  • Expert handling of the controls;
  • Use of correct road procedure;
  • Anticipating the actions of other road users and the appropriate action taken;
  • Sound judgement of distance, timing and speed;
  • Full consideration to all other road users;

The routes used for the test may carry heavy traffic or fast moving traffic, motorways, dual carriageways etc, the route will include both inside and outside of built - up areas.

Only six minor faults or under are allowed to gain a pass, if more than six minor faults are recorded by the examiner, or any serious or dangerous faults accrued on the test this will result in a failure decision.

The ability to perform any of the manoeuvres below must be demonstrated to a very high standard if requested;

  • move away straight ahead or at an angle;
  • overtake, meet or cross the path of other vehicles and take an appropriate course without undue hesitancy;
  • turn left and right hand corners correctly without undue hesitancy;
  • stop the vehicle as in an emergency;
  • drive the vehicle in reverse gear and whilst doing so enter limited openings to the left and right;
  • turn the vehicle round to face the opposite direction using a forward and reverse gear;
  • reverse park;

                             Remember - if you can't get it right, how can you teach somebody else how to!

At Oakwell School of Motoring we believe in two things;

1 · Only pay for the Part 2 training that you require;

Part 2 training consists of 10 hours (5 two - hour sessions) because we find that the average driver can expect to reach Part 2 test standard in about 10 lessons. However, each individual varies and it all depends on:

~ Your current driving skill level;
~ How quickly you can develop new skills;

At Oakwell we only ask you to pay for the training that is required and any other training needed can be discussed if / when it is required. All training is carried out in 5 two - hour training sessions and is complemented with the Oakwell School of Motoring Part 2 Driving Manual.

2 · All training conducted on a one to one basis;

Following the numerous training qualifications that I have accumulated over the years, I have learnt one valuable lesson, that training carried out on a one to one basis is more effective and beneficial to the student:

~ You are receiving my full devoted attention and time;
~ You are receiving full use of my knowledge and expertise;
~ You are receiving what you are paying for;
~ You are not sitting on the back seat whilst another student is driving;

ADI Part 2 training consists of:

1. Personal training by Peter J Cook B.A. (Hons) on a 1:1 basis, Peter is also a top grade 6 ADI ORDIT registered trainer.
2. 10 hours training (5 two - hour sessions unless previously arranged).
3. Extra training can be arranged to suit you if required.
4. If you require more than two hours training in one day or week because you want to hurry up the process, then this can be arranged if you contact the driving school.
